Upper Mustang Trek

Mustang has the rich culture of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The construction of settlements also looks like Tibetan. The people came over Nepal in the ancient time and settled there since 11the century or before. Besides such richness of the region, you can enjoy the views of the many high and gigantic mountains along the holy Kali Gandaki River like Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri und Tukuche Peak etc. The eroded landscapes are the additional beauties of the territory. Finally you reach the then Mustang Kingdom of Nepal for 3 nights. Muktinath, the meeting place of Hinduism and Buddhism is in the central part of Mustang district, which is  planned on the way back to Jomsom.


Day:  01. Arrival Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel

Day:  02. Sightseeing inside the Kathmandu valley

Day 3: Drive / Flight to Pokhara 850m and transfer to the Hotel / Boating in the Fewa Lake

Day 4: Flight to Jomsom 2710m and Trek to Kagbeni 2800m

Day 5: Trek from Kagbeni to Chhusang 2950m

Day 6: Trek from Chhusang to Syangmochen 3780m

Day 7: Trek from Syangmochen to Tsarang 3650m

Day 8: Trek from Tsarang via Lo-Gekar Monastery 3850m to Lo-Manthang 3800m

Day 9: In and around Lo-Manthang

Day 10: Visiting Chhyoser Fort Caves

Day 11: Drive back to Chhusang

Day 12: Trek from Chhusang to Muktinath 3800m

Day 13: Visit Muktinath holy sites, trek from Muktinath to Jomsom

Day 14: Flight from Jomsom back to Pokhara

Day 15: Flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Day 16: Final Departure back to your home



Day:  01. Arrival Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel:

Today you will be received by our representative at the Tribhuvan International Airport and you will be transferred to the assigned hotel in Kathmandu. Rest of the time you can enjoy just walking around or managing your Trekking Trip.

Day:  02. Sightseeing inside the Kathmandu valley:

On this day you can visit some cultural heritage sites like: Kathmandu Durbar Square, one of the ancient palace squares of the Kathmandu valley, where you can see the brilliant cultural architecture of Nepal; and afterwards Swayambhunath Stupa, an ancient and renowned Buddhist Monument on a hillock about 70m above the average Kathmandu Valley basin of 1350m. Then in the afternoon you can visit the biggest Stupa of Nepal named Bodhnath Stupa constructed in 5th Century AD.

Afterwards, you come back to your hotel and manage your packaging for the planned Trekking Trip.

After you come back to the Hotel, all necessary things for the Trekking Trip are discussed with your guide.

Day 3: Drive / Flight to Pokhara 850m and transfer to the Hotel / Boating in the Fewa Lake

According to your preference to drive or fly to Pokhara, the transfer will be organized. If you want to fly, it takes 25 minutes from Kathmandu. During good weather you may see the nice mountain ranges on the right-hand side. The rest of the day you can enjoy walking along the lake and market or as you prefer to spend. According to your arrival, you can enjoy the boat ride in the Fewa Lake.

If you prefer driving from Kathmandu, it may take around 7 hours. Many traditional typed villages and various types of landscapes you can observe during the whole drive up to Pokhara. Finally, you reach Pokhara and you can enjoy your free late afternoon.

Day 4: Flight to Jomsom 2710m and Trek to Kagbeni 2800m:

You will fly early morning according to the weather condition to Jomsom, the only airstrip of the Mustang district, the outlet to Mustang Trek. The panoramic flight takes around 20 minutes from Pokhara. After landing in Jomsom, you can have the time for taking tea or coffee for a while. The entrance formalities will be done by your crew members of the trekking team and you will start to Kagbeni at the bank of holy Kali Gandaki River. You will go along the same river till Chhusang for the next day. The view of mountains will welcome you most of the times. The gentle walk may take 3 to 4 hours according to your walking speed.

Day 5: Trek from Kagbeni to Chhusang 2950m:

Early morning after breakfast, the permit formalities for Upper Mustang trek are carried out by the crew in the Kagbeni office. Then you start your trek towards Chhusang. The trail goes along the same Kali Gandaki River to the right hand side. With gentle ups and downs you reach Tangbe Village for your lunch break in about 3 hours. After lunch break you continue your trek about 1.5 hours up to Chhusang village. You take your rest here for the night. Rest of the time you can visit the monastery or the surrounding areas of the village. The trek of today may take altogether 5 to 6 hours.

Day 6: Trek from Chhusang to Syangmochen 3780m:

Today you cross the Kali Gandaki River and go upwards via Tsaile 3150m to Somar 3600m via Somar-La Pass 3630m. You will take lunch break in Somar. After lunch you will walk down to a small rivulet and go gradual upwards to Bhena-La Pass about 3800m. From here you go still forward the highest pass for today Bagha-La about 3900m and go downhill to Syangmochen 3780m for your night-rest today. The whole trek of today may take around 7 hours without breaks.

Day 7: Trek from Syangmochen to Tsarang 3650m:

You have a long way today up to Tsarang, the second capital of the then Mustang Kingdom. There are some three passes today; the highest one is the Nyila Pass 4050m, from where you can have a nice view of Annpurna and Damodar Himalaya Range. The trail today is very rich of views up to Tibetan border range of mountains. In about 3 to 3.5 hours you reach the beautiful village named Ghami 3500m. After lunch break here in Ghami, you go further to Tsarang via Tsarang-La 3850m. Right after Ghami behind the Ghami River you will encounter the longest Mani wall of Mustang, eventually the longest of the type of Nepal. In 7 to 8 hours of walking time, you will reach the beautifully scattered village Tsarang. If you have extra time for viewing the surroundings, you can visit the old monasteries and ruins of the ancient palace.

Day 8: Trek from Tsarang via Lo-Gekar Monastery 3850m to Lo-Manthang 3800m:

Today you go gradual upwards to the oldest Nyingma-Pa monastery of Mustang district, even older than the first Tibetan Samye monastery believed to be established by Guru Padma Sambhaba. It may take about 2 hours to the monastery and after a short visit, you go further through the highest pass about 4300m, then you walk gently down to the then Mustang Kingdom Lo-Manthang, where you stay 3 nights. The day-walk of today may take 6 to 7 hours.

Day 9: In and around Lo-Manthang:

Today you have a free time for a whole day to enjoy surroundings and the old monasteries. There are three big old monasteries in Lo-Manthang. Before lunch time you can visit the monasteries and afterwards you can have free time for photographs of the surroundings. You will enjoy the whole day in and around here.

Day 10: Visiting Chhyoser Fort Caves:

Today you can visit the Chhyoser Fort Caves in the upper part of Lomanthang around 1.5 to 2 hours walk or hire horses or go by a reserved jeep. There is a very famous cave fort with many stories and rooms inside. The other attractions are the cave monasteries and old tantric monasteries of 15th century of earlier time. You can enjoy the amazing day in the unique vicinities. According to your interest you can spend around 6 hours or more for today’s trip.

Day 11: Drive back to Chhusang:

After visiting Lo-Manthang and surroundings, you will drive today back from Lo-Manthang to Chhusang. According to the condition of the road, it may take around 5 hours or little bit more. After check-in the lodge rooms you have time for your free excursions.

Day 12: Trek from Chhusang to Muktinath 3800m:

Today you have to cross a long uphill up to Zhong-La Pass about 4050m from Chhusang 2950m. The uphill-walk may take around 4 to 4.5 hours. After you reach the pass you go gently down to Muktinath about 1.5 hours. You have better to take a lunch pack for today. As you reach there, you have free time to visit the holy sites according to the arrival time and weather conditions. The whole day walk to Muktinath may take around 6 to 6.5 hours altogether.

Day 13: Visit Muktinath holy sites, trek from Muktinath to Jomsom:

The official visit of the holy site of Muktinath takes place today after the breakfast. You can keep your backpacks in the lodge till you finish and come back from the holy sites. After your pilgrimage visit to Muktinath, you will come back to the lodge and start to Jomsom either through the classical route or via Lubra. The trek today may take around 6 hours to Jomsom. It is the time today in the evening to celebrate with the crew members and honor them for their job, because you fly tomorrow morning to Pokhara, whether the crew members go by bus.

Day 14: Flight from Jomsom back to Pokhara:

Early morning according to the program you will fly to Pokhara. After arrival, check-in the hotel, and then you have free time for paragliding and/or sightseeing.

Day 15: Flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu:

According to the flight plan, you will fly to Kathmandu or you will drive back to Kathmandu. The flight takes about 25 minutes. According to the weather condition you can have the views of mountain ranges in the north. It depends upon your booked choice, whether you fly or drive to Kathmandu. After checking-in the hotel in Kathmandu, you have free time for shopping or relaxing.

Day 16: Final Departure back to your home:

As per your flight schedule, the final departure will be organized from the hotel in Kathmandu. The reporting time for passengers is generally given before 3 hours. We hope, you dear valued guests, you have enjoyed the whole trip with us in Nepal.
